Nowadays target localization is one of the key issues in wireless sensor networks. This technology has a widespread application prospect and tremendous economic value in military, medical care, integrated home system and wildlife monitoring.Based on the application of wildlife monitoring, we introduce the passive moving target detection and localization method in wireless sensor networks. The specific research work includes the following aspects:1) A moving target detection method based on the Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) value. With the signal diffraction theory and the geometry method, we construct the single-link target detection model. Then, according to the probability theory, we build a multi-link target detection model. Finally, we can ensure that there are at least k communication links, which can detect the moving target in a certain probability p by changing the models’parameters, such as the density of deployment, communication frequency between sensor nodes, sensor communication distance, target speed and so on.2) A moving target localization method based on the RSSI value. While the networks can detect moving targets, we explore the relationship between target location and RSSI according to the diffraction theory. By analyzing the relationship, we point out the non-deterministic between them. Therefore, we can decrease the uncertainly of target locations by increasing links. Finally, according to the relationship, we locate the target with multi-link and the centroid algorithm.
