Digital maps play an important role in people’s daily life. A digital map contains a very large amount of information, but usually the user is only interested in a very small part of it. Displaying all the information in the same way results in that the user can hardly focus on the part he is interested in. Map enhancement based on user’s interests facilitates emphasizing and enriching the information of user’s focal region. To understand user’s focal intention better, we propose a semantic-based approach to calculate user’s interests in this thesis. Taking objects’high-level semantic into consideration, the computation results of user’s interests conform to human’s perception better compared to traditional methods which calculate objects’ user’s interests based on their spatial distances. We construct a semantic forest model and semantic descriptions of objects; define the semantic distances’calculation method in this approach. The complex correlation between objects is quantized through their semantic descriptions. Compared with the conventional user’s interests calculation methods based on semantic, we can support more complicated semantic in real world by constructing the semantic forest model; in addition, semantic distances’automatic calculation saves a large amount of user interaction work.Based on the calculation results of user’s interests, we propose two map enhancement methods to highlight user’s focal region:firstly, render regions with different user’s interests in different styles to emphasize user’s focal region visually; secondly, enlarge the screen space occupied by user’s focal region and append some related pictures to present more information about it.
