With the development of modern medicine, the diagnosis and treatment frommedical institutions increasingly rely on various medical imaging methods.Meanwhile, picture archiving and communication system (PACS) has developedrapidly in recent years. As the only international standard in PACS, DICOM3.0(Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) has been drafted. DICOM3.0hasbeen supported by the major manufacturers all over the world. DICOM files aredifferent with common image files because DICOM files not only contain pixel data,but also contain patient’s basic information, symptoms, etc. There are a lot of PC/Macplatform-based programs able to parse DICOM files, whereas there are very fewsimilar programs on mobile platforms.The software presented in this thesis is based on Android platform. It can parseand display standard DICOM files, mark the region of interest with the Annotationsand Image Markup schema which was proposed by Stanford University. The softwarewould help physicians and medical students make diagnosis or case study on medicalimages.The software has several features:(1) It can parse standard DICOM files andshow the patient’s information at the left side of the medical images in aneasy-to-view manner.(2) It supports the adjustment of Window Width and WindowCenter in order to improve the visibility of the original images.(3) It provides severalmanually annotating tools for radiologists and physicians to mark the region ofinterest easily. The innovation of this software is introducing the core schema in themedical image annotation field, i.e. AIM (Annotation and Image Markup) standardschema. With combining DICOM images and AIM schema in an intuitive way, thesoftware makes medical images much easier to understand. In addition, since thesoftware runs on Android platform, medical workers can use it with a portableAndroid terminal to study or work anytime, anywhere. The software designed in thisthesis has been released on Google Play, called‖Dicom Editor‖.
