RS codes have strong correction capabilitfor both random errors and burst errors. Thus, it is widely used in kinds of communication and storage systems. In recentyears, the RS soft-decision decoding algorithms became the new research hotspotabout RS codes. The soft-decision decoding has better coding gain than thehard-decision decoding. Nevertheless, RS soft-decision decoding algorithms are toocomplicated to be realized by the hardware so these algorithms are never applied inwireless sensor networks. In this paper, RS encoding algorithm, hard-decision decoding algorithm and thesoft-decision decoding algorithm, LCC decoding, of RS codes are illustrated. Afterthat, the simulation methods of hard-decision decoding of BCH codes, hard-decisiondecoding and soft-decision decoding of RS codes are given. In the following part, thehardware design of RS encoder and three high efficiency kinds of LCC RS decodersTo compare RS codes with BCH codes, BCH codes encoders and hard-decisiondecoders, RS codes encoders, hard-decision decoders and soft-decision decoders areall implemented by Verilog HDL, synthesized by Design Complier underSMIC0.18μm process and analyzed their power consumption by Prime Time PX. Inthis way, the encoding and decoding energy of a message bit can be calculated. UsingC code, the performance of BCH codes and RS codes with different algorithms aresimulated in Rayleigh fading channel. After establishing corresponding formula, thesignal energy to transmit a message bit can be estimated. Combined with the encodingand decoding energy, the total energy to transmit a message bit by evergy decodingalgorithm of certain code in wireless sensor networks can be got.By comparing the total energy to transmit a message bit by evergy decodingalgorithm, it is shown that RS codes with LCC decoding algorithm have better energyefficiency when the transmission distance is large or the channel condition is not ideal. It becomes more significant with the increase of the distance or the deterioration ofthe channel.
