In modern times, with the rapid development of science and technology, activities in high school associations which satisfy the students’various needs including knowledge and experience acquisition, comprehensive capabilities training and independent development are flourishing. While in terms of the problems and experience in the development of associations, we need to organize, summarize and extract. Therefore, this thesis aims to study associations as a form of community and analyze the development of associations from the perspective of cultivating public spirit. The thesis consists of four parts. The first part is the introduction, which explains the purpose and significance, basic viewpoints and concepts, research status at home and abroad and presents the method, content and objects of the research. The second part is the theoretical basis of associations. This part starts from the group life experience, discusses the living conditions of human community during the ancient times, modern commercial society and today’s society and draws a conclusion that no matter how the production method and group life forms change, the public spirit of "solidarity" remains constant. On this basis, Dewey’s expounding of community life’s influence on education is introduced. In combination of the review and sentiment of school days by a number of outstanding people, the view that "association experience of high school students is a good way to nurture the public spirit" is put forward. The third part is the empirical research on the status and problems of associations. Four cases are used to analyze the main problems of high school associations from the perspective of public spirit nurturing. The problems are random selections of association leaders, insufficient role defining of leaders, no common goals for associations’activities and blindly implementation of activities and lack of self-regulation behaviors and difficulties in taking common actions. The fourth part discusses how to seek public spirit and explores other significance of associations. Also, four cases are adopted to explore the association construction of high school associations. From our point of view, the effective ways to solve the problem of deficiency in public spirit are:identifying association leaders through democratic and fair methods; forming the association through frequent interpersonal interactions; establishing a common vision centering on discussing issues that most people are concerned about; helping members to transform the realization of the common goals into practical actions and reflect the public spirit in an integrated and real way. At the same time, we also propose and verify two viewpoints:"the association is the community where students experience the happiness gained from joint-learning" and "autonomous association life is a useful attempt for students to enjoy leisure life".
