Many middle school students who have got good marks enter senior high school with full enthusiasm and confidence, but they find it much harder to learn math well after a period of time, which is far beyond their expectation. As we can see, their math falls behind by a large margin, which has a negative effect on their mathematical study. As a matter of fact, mathematical study in senior school basically differs from that of junior school in the following aspects, such as teaching contents, teaching requirements, teaching patterns, ability requirements, levels of thinking and studying approaches, of which intelligence is the most fundamental factor that affects students’mathematical study. The scientific researches into intelligence have always been the focus of psychologists and educators home and abroad. Over the past ten decades, the influential intelligence theories have emerged in large numbers. American psychologist Robert.J.Sternberg put forward the concept of The Successful Intelligence after years of devoted researches. The new intelligence theory that strengthens the social nature closely links intelligence to actual life, which is an important breakthrough for the traditional intelligence. Sternberg’s successful intelligence includes analysis intelligence, creative intelligence and practice intelligence. This theory expands our knowledge about intelligence, providing us with powerful support for the quality education, the mathematical curriculum reform and creative education, which are being popularized vigorously at present. What is more, the new concept makes it practical for the teachers to carry on their intelligence teaching patterns. The thesis is focused on the further research into Sternberg’s intelligence theory, studying its essence and intension and bringing to light its function of educational instruction. Based on the students of grade one in Wuhan No.2High School, the thesis will survey their actual situation of mathematical study and their performances in the successful intelligence by way of questionnaire research approach. On the other hand, the thesis aims to analyze the teachers’comprehension of education, students curriculum and evaluation and their teaching behaviors.According to the results of the survey, the thesis will combine the theory of intelligence and mathematical teaching and sum up the gains and losses of how the mathematical teaching acts in developing the students’successful intelligence. Intended to develop students’successful intelligence, the thesis will put forward some suggestions and tactics on how to use the intelligence theory to guide mathematical teaching.
