National Compulsory Education Curriculum Standards in English of2011require students to master basic English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and to develop the basic ability to communicate with others in English. The standards encourage students to find language rules under the guidance of teachers through a variety of interactive classroom activities thus the students can cultivate their comprehensive ability of using language. Therefore, the cities across the country have set up a test to check the students’ English listening and speaking skills. Test results show that the students’ listening and speaking skills are not very desirable. That is because students have kept silent in English class for a long time. Classroom silence affects students’ learning and teachers’ teaching quality greatly. Under such kind of background, the thesis aims to explore the manifestation of junior middle school English classroom silence and forming reasons through the ways such as classroom observation, questionnaire, interview and provide some suggestions and strategies to break the junior middle school English classroom silence so as to promote the development of the English classroom teaching in harmony and provide some reference information for English teaching reform.The thesis is composed of five parts. The first part contains the introduction, the topic, the background and the literature review. The second part defines the concept, analyses concept and types of classroom silence. Therefore, it can provide theoretical evidence for the study of classroom silence. The third part states the survey instruments, survey time, objects, and presents the results of the survey. The fourth part analysis the causes of middle school students’ classroom silence through the results of the survey and finds out the effective teaching strategies to ease the classroom silence.
