As the rapid growth and expanding of internet technology, the network has become a part of everyday life for human. However, in the mean time, among a broad range of internet users’behaviors, the problem of internet addiction of undergraduates has greatly raised people’s concern. And online game addiction has become the most popular addiction type for internet users. So it’s necessary to pay close attention to online game addiction of undergraduates. To explain addictive behaviors, Gray (1972) proposed Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory which postulating two basic and independent biologically-based dimensions of motivation and personality. One of these is Behavioral Approach system, which responds to signals of reward and other desirable states by strengthening or directing ongoing behavior and may be experienced as impulsivity. The other one is Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS), which responds to signals of punishment and other aversive states with heightened anxiety and tends to inhibit ongoing behavior. The two systems are believed to have different neural substrates and have distinct influences on behavior. Previous studies found the relationship between Reinforcement Sensitivity personality and internet addiction. With this in mind, the nature and extent of individual adolescent online game addiction could well be linked to the predominance of one or the other of these two behavioral tendencies. Personality is an important influence factor for internet addiction, and previous researches have argued that researchers should distinguish different types of internet addiction while doing related research on personality. Besides, to have a thorough understanding of the relationship between Reinforcement Sensitivity personality and online game addiction, the effecting mechanism such as the mediating role of motivation for playing online games should not be neglected. The present study aimed to explore the relationships between Reinforcement sensitivity, motivations for playing online games and online game addiction. A total of1000undergraduate students took part in the current study. The results showed:1. There were significant gender differences on scores of total score in online game motivation and dimensions of venting, achievement-seeking and features of online game and there were significant gender differences on scores of total score in online game addiction.2. The correlation among all variables were significant. Online game addiction was positively correlated with BAS (drive, reward, fun-seeking)、BIS、 motivation for playing games; BAS (drive, reward, fun-seeking)、 BIS were positively correlated with playing games.3. Hierarchical regressions showed that BIS and BAS both emerged as significant predictors of online game addiction. In addition, BAS-drive, BAS-reward and BAS-funs-seeking subscale all predicted online game addiction. However, BAS*BIS did not predict online game addiction.4. In further analyses, the nonparametric bias-corrected percentile Bootstrap method was used to analyze the mediating effect of motivation for playing online games, indicating that motivation for playing online games mediated the relationship between BAS and online game addiction; however, but did not mediate the relationship between BIS and online game addiction.
