Nunchakus Technology System Research

Nunchucks, a quite valuable heritage of Chinese martial arts, is not only the embodiment and supporter of Chinese traditional culture, but also the continuation and expansion of Chinese martial arts due to its original nationality. A number of scholars hold the opinion that the skill of this athletics nowadays has been simplified, thus its function and technique have been weakened to some extend; meanwhile, this kind of athletics lays more emphasis on its performing by creating many more complicated moves which makes it more difficult to master. On the other hand, many scholars think that lots of people are not familiar with Nunchucks’s skill system. As for its skill using, just because of its unique force generation, moves like hack, sweep, hold legs high which show their tremendous lethality are quite often used in a actual combat, however, skills on hit, twist and flip are in a relatively small amount while their use in a close fight is deadly urged. So professionals should give a deeper exploration on this matter. And at last, the training system for this art is not thorough. Compare to the ornamental cudgel technique, the attacking cudgel technique should have a more cultured training method, a clearer goal and a higher level request.Author of this paper analyzes the referring fundamental principles and important concepts by looking up piles of documents. In the meantime, he initially builds a drafted structure on Nunchucks skill system and reaches a conclusion as follows:First, the whole skill system can be devided into four parts named basic skill, offensive skill, defensive skill and skill of counterattack. Second, basic skill includes principal footwork, major hand holding methods and basic kicks. Footwork mainly includes fencing footwork, cross step, alternating tread and so on; as to hand holding methods, we have front grasp, back grasp and another two methods; and basic kicks consist of spinning hook kick, whip-leg and others. Third, skills like hack, sweep and flip are the main offensive skills in Nunchucks; in terms of defensive skills, support, grapple and dodge take up the three most important skills; counterattack is basically presented in two forms:one is stab style counterattack, and the other one is hack style counterattack. At the end of this paper, author proposes several suggestions for Nunchucks’ future development, to speak them specifically, we should lay more emphasis on this skill itself by strengthening its training and competition, improving the teaching ability of the whole teaching staff members, raising relative funds and attach great importance on its theoretical and practical researches.
