As there is an increased emphasis on studying English in our country’s education system, more and more students started studying English in primary school and contiued to study English in college. However, despite of years of studying, there is a lack of balance in the levels of written and spoken English proficiency. Many students are unable to communicate using English with others even in very simple and common social activities."Unspeakable English" has become a very common phenomenom, which is most notable in the rural areas. As the number of years spent on studying English increases, many students do not see any. progress in their listening comprehension and the ability to express themselves in English. This, in turn, will inevitably discourage their enthusiam for studying English and lead to the loss of interest and motivation in the continuation of studying English.in the years ahead. To be poor in English will. to some extent. become an obstacle to be an all-round student.The objective of this present paper is to analyze the status quo of the spoken ability of English and the reasons for the existing problems in the study of spoken English among high-grade primary school pupils in the countryside who are confronted with, as the results of the analysis indicate, four problems in the study of spoken English:lack of any emphasis on English as a subject in the curriculum, poor quality of English teachers, lack of a suitable environment for students to practice speaking English, and a psychological obstacle’ which makes it harder to engage in conversion in English. In this pear, the authors provide the following suggestions and strategies with regard to resolving these problems. make sure to emphasize the importance of English as a subject, enhance the training of English teachers, guide the students to overcome the psychologic obstacle in speaking English and identify effectiive ways to improve their proficiency in speaking English. Meanwhile, the results of the present study may help English teachers resolve various problems in the teaching of spoken English.
