The structure of disciplines is the way that different disciplines of university connect, influence and interact each other, the existing type of university’s disciplines and the basis of other structures of university. The scientific and reasonable discipline structure has a far-reaching significance for training high-quality talents to adapt to the development of the country and the demand of economic growth, realizing people’s all-round development and promoting the advancement of the school teaching and research.As the top and cutting-edge force of higher education, first-class universities form their own growth mechanism and a scientific and reasonable system of discipline structures in the process of their formation and development. As one of the most famous universities in the world, Harvard University has the history of nearly four hundred years. After several times reforms, it has become a partial-arts and science, traditional comprehensive university with11colleges, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, medicine and other disciplines. Peking University is a famous comprehensive university in our country and its discipline structure system went through several stages. And now it forms a comprehensive discipline structure system which is partial arts-science basic disciplines. The two universities, to a certain extent, are on the behalf of the discipline structural development of the United States’and China’s top universities.Through the comparative study on the growth history of Harvard University’s and Peking University’s discipline structures, we find that compared with the United States, there are some gaps for the discipline structure of our universities in some aspects. So China should make adjustment and optimization goals be scientifically and rationally in the process of the discipline structure adjustment and optimization, and combine its macro-control with the independent adjustment of colleges and universities. The universities should root in the arts and sciences, take the applied sciences as the backbone, focus on the construction of the main disciplines and the strong disciplines, and develop the interdisciplinary in order to promote the optimization of the discipline structures of the universities. |
