English is a compulsory course in art school. However, at present, teacher-centered teaching is still the main part of English teaching in art school. Students are mostly constrained to study grammar and vocabulary through textbooks and reference books. Students passively accept what the teacher has instructed. What’s more, the time for art school classroom teaching and learning is too limited and it is difficult for students to have a nice language learning atmosphere. Students need more chances to practice speaking and listening in the limited English class a week. This paper is just based on this background and mainly studies the practices and applications of extracurricular activities in art school English class.English extracurricular activity is a supplement to the classroom teaching. It first appeared in American colleges in the nineteenth century. At present, it has spread to schools and universities all over the world, and proved to be an effective form of additional language learning. This paper is based on the relevant theories--constructivism theory, motivation theory and linguistic environment theory to conduct experiments and researches according to the physical and psychological features of art school students and the present teaching situation of art school English class. The questions that are mainly studied in this research are presented below:1. Can art school students’ English ability be improved if they take part in the extracurricular activities?2. Can art school students’ interest in English be aroused through the participation of various extracurricular activities? This paper is composed of five parts as the following:Chapter1introduces the background of the research and the significance of the research; Chapter2concerns a comprehensive literature review on the theoretical basis of extracurricular activities and the feasibility of the study; Chapter3is the research methodology which especially discusses the application of extracurricular activity in art school English classes; Chapter4presents data analyses from the investigation and the discussion about the results; Chapter5concludes the major findings, limitations of the research and puts forward a couple of suggestions for further research.During the five months, the author sets up a one-term research program for two Senior One classes in Dalian Art School and with the relevant information collected from pre-test and after-test, questionnaires and interviews, the author makes a penetrated analysis. The conclusions are that extracurricular activities can highly motivate art school students, lower down the students’ anxiety and promote the students interest in English. In addition, extracurricular activities can promote students autonomy. As a result, students can greatly benefit from it.
