This paper reports on the instructional design of a reading class based on schema theory in junior high school English teaching in an attempt to get some implications for English reading teaching.The participants in the study were students of one class from Grade7in one of the key junior high schools in Heping District in Tianjin and the author of this paper is their English teacher.The procedures are as follows:firstly, the author, guided by the instructional design method, designed the reading teaching based on schema theory. Then she applied this teaching plan to reading teaching in her own class to see how well it worked. The author used self-reflection, classroom observation and interview with the students to analyze the effect of this class. It is revealed that this class had a positive effect on students’learning. In this class, students were more active. They were more interested in English reading. In addition, they thought that this class helped them a lot about what to do while reading a passage. They also acquired some reading skills in this reading class.
