In second language acquisition, motivation includes the attitudes and affective states thatinfluence the degree of effort when learning a second language. It plays a very important partin English learning and teaching. The new English curriculum puts great emphasis on learningmotivation and it is recognized as one of the important goals of English learning and teaching.It is necessary for student to turn their interest into steady learning motivation. The purpose ofthis study is to explore what is the difference between senior school students’ English learningmotivation and how to stimulate students’ English learning motivation.The guiding theory of this paper is intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation as wellas instrumental motivation and integrative motivation. In this study, the author dividesmotivation into7kinds that is interest, personal development, responsibility, information,going abroad, situation and achievements. These7kinds motivation are divided into24motivation factors. Questionnaire survey and interview methods are undertaken to investigatethe different motivation among senior school students, especially focus on the differencebetween boys and girls, good students and poor students, rural students and urban students.According to the results of the survey, the motivation of senior school students is verydifferent. Their English learning motivation is influenced by different kinds of motivation aswell as different motivation factors. Based on the survey results, it is suggested that students’motivation can be stimulated. The suggestions refer to interest, teaching contents and methods,foreign culture and teaching materials, classroom atmosphere, cultivating students’self-confidence, charm of teacher, relationship between teachers and students, relationshipamong students.
