Learning motivation is the intrinsic motivation of language learning and it is closely related to learners.Therefore,it is necessary to study learners' Chinese learning motivation when teaching Chinese as a foreign language.This study takes the case of Pu Rao Middle School in Chiang Mai,Thailand as a case study,high school Chinese class students as the subject of investigation,and the three-level theory of Dornyei's motivation for foreign language learning as the theoretical basis throughout.This method uses a combination of quantitative research and qualitative research.“What”,“why” and “how to do” are three steps.First,a questionnaire survey was used to analyze the learning motivations of Chinese students in Pu Rao Middle School.The collected data were compared and analyzed using SPSS 20.0 statistical software to solve “What are the characteristics of Chinese learning motivations of Chinese students in Pu Rao Middle School?” This issue is followed by the use of interviews and observations,combined with Dornyei's three-level theory of motivation to explore and analyze the factors affecting motivation from the language level,learner level,and learning context level to solve the “why” question;Finally,based on the analysis results,combined with my practical experience,put forward teaching suggestions on “how to inspire and maintain students' motivation for learning Chinese,” thereby solving the “how to do” problem.The specific conclusions are as follows:1.Characteristics of Chinese Learning Motivation of Chinese Students in Pu Rao Middle School(1)On the whole,the students in the Chinese class of Pu rao Middle School are not very motivated to learn Chinese and their motivation is not strong;(2)In terms of types of learning motivation,external motivation is the main factor;(3)There are significant differences between external motivation and instrumental motivation in terms of gender,age,and length of Chinese learning.2.Factors Affecting Chinese Learning Motivation of Chinese Students in Pu Rao Middle School(1)Language level: Students have less contact with Chinese culture and lack of cultural identity.The culture of the target country affects students' motivation for learning Chinese.(2)Learner level: Students' achievements need to be clear,learning goals are mostly utilitarian goals,and students' achievements need to influence learning motivation;insufficient learning interest,students' low self-efficacy,low self-evaluation of Chinese learning,and Lack of self-confidence in learning Chinese,which is one of the important influencing factors that leads to weak motivation;(3)The level of learning situation: The school's arrangement of Chinese courses,selection of teaching materials,support for Chinese activities,teachers' personal charm,teaching methods,and amount of classroom activities will affect students' motivation for Chinese learning.Based on this,this article is based on the actual situation of Pu rao Middle School in Thailand.It tries to put forward teaching suggestions based on the theoretical basis.It emphasizes that teachers should choose a teaching method that suits the characteristics of the students,and pay attention to awakening the students' self-confidence from a psychological perspective.Motivation to learn,strengthen motivation to help students learn Chinese well.
