| The Polytechnic Institution was the product of Chinese and western culture exchange during the period. It was not only the platform on which the West showed the advanced science and technology to China, but also the opportunity for China to learn the advanced culture of the West. Demonstrating and analyzing this case could enhance our understanding about the Westernization Movement, the communication, conflict and the cultural integration between China and the West. Based on the previous research achievements, this thesis focuses on the early stages of the Polytechnic Institution.This thesis mainly researches on the following aspects. The first part primarily discusses the influences of the North China Branch of the Royal Asiatic on the management models, organization and staff supports of the Polytechnic Institution. The second part sorts out the historical sequence of the Polytechnic Institution, divided by three parts which are library, exhibition hall, enrollment and science lectures, and analyses the causes of this phenomena. The fourth part makes it clear the composing structures of early Polytechnic Institution members, as well as their conflict and dispute which affect the Polytechnic Institution development. In conclusion, the thesis suggests that besides three objective reasons that are unborn western thinking, shortage of fund, lack of master teachers, there are other two reasons that have never been mentioned, which are the blind expansion of the Polytechnic Institution goals by the committee members, and the internal disagreement in the committee. |
