The evaluation of textbooks is not only important for investigating the changes oftextbooks caused by the new curriculum reform, but also important for selecting andcompiling more appropriate textbooks. However, we should take into consideration not onlythe factors of criteria of designing textbooks when evaluating it, but also the effect ofimplementing textbooks in practicing the new curriculum because the merits and demerits oftextbooks can only be found through application. Teachers and compilers of textbooks will, inthis way, have a proper perspective on the textbooks designed or taught by themselves so as topromote the development of good textbooks.Following the curriculum reform of basic education, the new textbooks named Successwith English was put into use in primary schools in Guangzhou in2002. The new textbooksnamed Oxford English (Guangzhou version) was put into use in junior schools in Guangzhouin2007. The goals of the two textbooks are to make language learning motivate andsuccessful through a step-by-step progression that builds confidence and leads to open-endedactivities where students can actively relate learning to their personal lives. The two sets oftextbooks have many new teaching ideas and methods. They focus on the students‘communicative competence and linguistic competence. Therefore, some teachers complainthat there‘re so many contents in Oxford English. It isn‘t connected to Success with English.It‘s difficult for the students to learn. Some parents and students complain that it‘s a burden.According to the core of the new curriculum reform,the rules of connection, the materialsfunction and the subject characters and by referring to the theory at home and abroad, thewriter makes a questionnaire for the teachers and students and interview them. The purposesare to find out the problems on the connection between the two textbooks and to deal withthese problems. The evaluation to the connection between Oxford English and Success withEnglish can help us judge its quality and value objectively and scientifically, and it may offerthe reference for the writers and the users to make a decision.
