This paper on the basis of the nature of graduate educationattempts to explore what kind of mentor relationship in the current graduate education canhelp graduate students to promote the output of knowledge. Thus, the main questions ofthis paper will be listed as:(1)What are the factors of promoting the graduate students knowledge output andhow to interact about the various factor;(2)What are the common characteristics of mentor relationship that promotegraduate students knowledge output;(3)If is there a kind of theoretical framework of analyzing mentor relationship thatpromote graduate students knowledge output. This paper adopts a qualitative research method, based on the deep interview materialfrom seventeen full-time PhDs in a major university in Wuhan from the perspective ofgraduates, the purpose of which mainly discuss the process of the mentor relationshipaffecting graduate students’ knowledge output. This paper codes and analyzes the datacollects using the three coding technology of grounded theory and ultimately developed agrounded theory model of supervisor-graduate interaction promoting graduates’knowledge output, then describe and analyze the process the supervisor-graduateinteraction based on Bandura’s Reciprocal Determinism from three dimensions:personality, behavior and environment. From a graduate students’ knowledge output perspective, this paper on the basis ofother disciplines as pedagogical, sociology, psychology and management theories putsforward these conclusions: (1)Graduate academic loyalty, the involvement of the supervisors and the degree ofmentor relation as three great factors affect the progress of knowledge output;(2)Mentor-student academic community canpromote graduate students knowledgeoutput, in which graduate students and mentors unite for the academic community andhave a shared vision in the academic field, for the common academic goal, then integratedresearch, teaching and learning for one thing by academic belief;(3)The common characteristics of mentor relationship that promote graduatestudents knowledge output:strong academic motivation and shared academic vision as thedriving force, effective discussion mode, mutual encouragement through of mentorleadership and peer groups, to inspire graduate students knowledge output and thedevelopment of the team, so as to form a conscious heritage concept of team culture;(4)Three grounded theories of analyzing mentor relationship that promote graduatestudents knowledge output: Fit principle, Expecting principle and Empathy principle.Graduate students think that the fit of the mind and action between mentor-studentdetermine the effectiveness of knowledge output, expectations and empathy will be adirect result of the spiritual experience such as interdependence and passing feelings. This study consists of five parts: the first part is introduction, intended to illustrate thebackground and significance of the research, as well as domestic and foreign literaturereview on mentor relationship; the second part is research plan, mainly on the researchobjects, the theoretical basis and methods, the reliability and validity analysis; the thirdpart is research result, detailed analysis of the types on the interaction between graduatesand supervisors, the current situation, the impact factors, construction strategies andresearch summary. The four part is reflecting on the research, included the characteristicsand shortcomings of the paper as well as suggestions for further investigation.
