Cai Yuanpei, as a famous educationist, thinker and democratic revolutionist, isknown by everyone in China. There are a lot of brilliant expositions about educationin his numerous works, especially the one of the moral education which contains a lotof original ideas. The citizen education projects are put forward with the developmentof Chinese modern transformation process and the rise of civil society, and also thehelp of the moral education workers who have been tirelessly explore the new way ofmoral education which meet the demand of social development. It is significant toexplore from the perspective of modernity transformation and to guide the citizeneducation in China.The thesis is based on the perspective of modern Chinese transition to modernityand made a comprehensive system to introducing of the background, the theoreticalbasis, the main content and the practical influence of his thoughts. The researchresults in this thesis will be very helpful to strengthen the construction of citizenmoral and thinking. There are five parts of the thesis:It first introduced the purpose of the topic, research significance, research status,the key problems of this study and the solution, research methods and the originalelements in the introduction part. Then elaborate the basic notions of the citizens,civic virtue, civic moral education, transformation of modernity.It then reviewed the background of his thoughts in the second part. After theSino-Japanese War, the increasing national crisis gradually changed his thoughts. CaiYuanpei’s thoughts are developed in the modernity transformation of the socialbackground and the cultural background of the collision between Chinese and westernculture, and criticism and reflection on the traditional education.The third part mainly analyses the theoretical basis. It illustrated it from threedimensions. First of all, from the perspective of Confucianism of Chinese traditionalculture and the "golden mean". Secondly, the ideological and theoretical system isinfluenced by western modern culture, including the French revolution, Aristotle’sideas of harmonious education, kropotkin, ideas of mutual cooperation, Kant’sdualistic philosophy, BaoErSheng harmonic theory thoughts, Spencer’s theory ofevolution, ethics of Taoism ideology, the civilization thought of Lampe lacey, etc.Third, derived from contemporary scholar Yan fu’s "San yu" theory, Liang qichao andWang guowei "xinmin " theory and "training ideal human beings" theory ".The main content of his thoughts are elaborated in the fourth part. The core of hisidea are expressed by "freedom, equality, love"; and the aim is to making the "perfectpersonality". The thesis finally discussed his "education policy”—army national education, materialism education, moral education, world outlook education andaesthetic education, especially the citizen moral education.The last two parts made a conclusion of the practice effect of the thought. Itillustrated respectively from some aspects such as the abolition of the family,women’s education, social education and university education in the hope of tracinghis education practice and its effect. Thus, his thoughts has contemporary inspiration.Taking history as a mirror, his thought selected the essence and enable the moderntransition of moral education break out of his dilemma.
