This paper emphasizes the state of Teacher Education and Training in Nigeria, a country officially called the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Located in West Africa, Nigeria is a federal constitutional republic comprising36states, with being Abuja. There are over500ethnic groups in Nigeria of which the three largest ethnic groups are the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. The British colonised Nigeria in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. They set up administrative structures and law, while recognizing traditional African chiefs. Nigeria became independent in1960. Nigeria, popularly referred to as "the Giant of Africa", is the most populous country in Africa, and the seventh most populous country in the world. The country is roughly, at least demographically, divided in half between Christians, who mostly live in the South and central parts of the country, and Muslims. The national official language is English. Teacher Education in Nigeria is as old as western education. Here we have discussed the relative roles of the Christian missions and the colonial administration; the advent of teacher education through the colonial master; the achievements and weaknesses of this profession in the nation of Nigeria which, indeed, is the central concern of this research. In order to find out the weakness in the Nigerian teacher education both the old system, that is, teacher education before independence and the new system of teacher education, that is, teacher education after independence, were researched upon. Finally conclusions and recommendations were made.Several recommendations are forwarded to see to:the resolution of the problem of irregular payment of teacher’s remuneration; refocusing and sharpening Government education policy; promotion of initiatives and programs that will focus on providing incentives to those involved in the teaching profession.
