The role of information technology in development: A case study of Nigeria

Abstract/Summary:
Information technology introduces a new era that delineates knowledge and communication as the nucleus of social change. Nigeria is a developing country that is trying to benefit from information technology. This study describes the state of information/communication technologies in Nigeria; it examines the extent government incorporates information/communication technologies in formulating policies; it discusses the perceptions of Nigerian leaders on policy to enhance the development of information technologies, and it also argues that there is abundance of human, natural, and financial resources to harness the development of an information technology in the country.;The research methods for the study include the historical, the analytical and the qualitative survey techniques. The survey method involves the perceptions of top government officials, top officials of parastatals, business executives, information/communication experts, and other persons chosen at random who responded to open-ended questions. This study concludes that there are prospects and potentials to develop an information technology in Nigeria. Therefore, it recommends that the Nigerian government invests in Research and Development and map out a comprehensive policy that stresses the development of an information technology.
