| Place attachment (PA) is a multifaceted and complex phenomenon that incorporates different aspects of people-place bonding. However, the existing researches mainly focus on human geography, a few studies pay attention to college freshman. In fact, such researches not only draw people’s concern about the development of theory of PA, but also a new way to know about the freshmen’s adaptation. The author completed College Freshman Place Attachment Scale through in-depth interview and open-ended questionnaire. A total of1147freshmen were collected to study the relationship of place attachment, personality traits and adaptability through the College Freshman Place Attachment Scale, EPQ-RSC and China College Student Adjustment Scale (CCSAS). The results of research show:(1) The College Freshman Place Attachment Scale got16items and consisted of three factors such as place dependence (PD), place identity (PI) and social bonding (SB). Statistic analysis results showed that the Scale had got a good reliability and validity.(2) The level of college freshmen’s place attachment is above the average; the strongest is place identity, social bonding in the second, the last one is place dependence.(3)The place attachment does not appear significant difference in gender. Female is significantly higher than male in the dimension of social bonding.(4)There is significant difference among the one-child or not in the place attachment and its three dimensions. All the scores in the one-child are higher than non-only child.(5) There is no difference among the freshmen from other provinces, other cities in same province and the city of the college. The score in freshmen of the city is higher than other provinces’in place dependence; and the score of social bonding is higher than the freshmen of other provinces and cities; however, their score of place identity is lower than other provinces’freshmen.(6) There is significant difference in the parental rearing pattern. The scores from democratic and laissez-faire families are higher than authoritarian and permissive families in place attachment, place dependence and social bonding. (7)Significant positive correlation exists between place attachment, introversion/extroversion and adaptability. Significant negative correlation exists between place attachment and psychoticism.(8) Place attachment could predict significantly the adaptability of college freshmen. Moreover, introversion/extroversion and psychoticism could be the mediator in this process. |
