On the basis of reviewing the background, the past and presence of relevantstudies concerning the nature and measurement of resilience, this study innovativelydefine resilience as one kind of characteristic ‘within individual’ and carried out threesub-studies derived form the definition.Sub-study one use Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory FactorAnalysis (CFA) to construct a new structural model of resilience and composedResilience Inventory for Secondary School Students (RIS).Sub-study two tested663secondary school student subjects with RIS and89ofthem with Cattell16Personality Factors Questionnaire (16PF), to assess the presentresilient level of the students, analyzing difference depending on variables like sex, age, etc., and checking out the correlation between resilience and personalityfactors.Sub-study three designed a systematic group intervention method based mainlyupon Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Psychodrama Therapy for those lessresilient students. An resilience intervention group which was treated using thismethod, a parallel group which received normal group activity treatment, and acontrol group which did not receive any intervention were all set up to examine theeffectiveness of the intervention. The conclusions of this study are as follow:(1) The structural model of resilience that was confirmed through EFA and CFAconsists of four factors including Cognitive Appraisal(C), Behavioral Dynamic(B),Personality Feature(P) and Social Environment(S). The RIS gains good reliability andvalidity on whole scale as well as four factor scales.(2) The majority of present secondary school students possess a middle level ofresilience. Sex, type of school, single-child or not, minority or not, and education ofthe parents rarely impact students’ resilience. Their resilient level declines along withthe growth of age, but with no age*sex interactions. In addition, self-evaluation offamily economy state has influence on resilience. (3) There are significant corraltionships between resilience and somepersonality factors of16PF. The personality factors of Emotional Stability(C),Impulsivity(F), Conformity(G), Boldness(H) and Self-discipline(Q3) correlate positivelywith resilience while Insecurity(O) and Tension(Q4) correlate negatively withresilience.(4) The group intervention method designed in sub-study three effectivelyraised the level of resilience within selected subjects, especially on the resilientfactors of Cognitive Appraisal, Behavioral Dynamic and Social Environment. Theeffect of such treatment in the intervention group is much more significant than inthe parallel group and control group.
