Since the ancient times, China has been a country with long poetic tradition. Thousands of years, with great enthusiasm, the ancient Chinese constructed an ideal world of classical poetry. When drifting in the blue ocean of the poetry, we could feel inspiration from the spirit, feel sublimation from the soul, and therefore be deeply touched from the heart. In the long river of history, as a typical representative of Chinese culture, the classical poetry has affected Chinese people from generation to generation. However, its further development has encountered many obstacles. In our primary and secondary school, not enough attention is paid to the classical poetry instruction. We should improve the methods to promote the standard of classical poetry instruction. A natural question is that how to make the classical poetry instruction effective. For solutions, we expect to obtain experience from Ye Jiaying, a famous poet and poetry instructor.Ye Jiaying is not only a great poet but also a famous poetry instructor. In the one hand, she gains high achievements in academic research of classical poetry and also as a poet, she creates a great deal of charming poetry over the year passed. Furthermore, she is highly respected as a worldwide famous poetry instructor, who has been instructing poetry for at least sixty years. As if by magic, people crowd into her poetry class, appreciate her instruction and could always be deeply inspired and touched. What is Ye Jiaying’s magic power making his poetry class so attractive? The prime concern of this thesis is to study Ye Jiaying’s thought and practice within poetry instruction. By summarizing the valuable elements within her poetry instruction, we aim at providing some inspiring experience and concepts to optimize the poetry class in our school.This thesis consists of five parts. In the introduction chapter, we explain firstly the motivation of this thesis and present then the research schemes. The main purpose of Chapter1is to describe the poetry career of Ye Jiaying from two aspects, POETRY CREATION AND RESEARCH and POETRY INSTRUCTION. In Chapter2, we concentrate on studying Ye Jiaying’s thoughts within her poetry instruction, including the thoughts of educational faith, instructional objectives and curriculum system. In Chapter3, the attention will be paid to Ye Jiaying’s practice of poetry instruction. We mainly study her interesting speech style instruction and emphasize the real interaction between the learners and the instructor. In Chapter4, on the background of curriculum reform, we analyze the contemporary significance of Ye Jiaying’s poetry instruction. For this purpose, firstly, we consider the missions and challenges of contemporary poetry instruction and secondly discuss the inspiration of Ye Jiaying’s poetry instruction.
