Because of its distinguishing features, the honorific in Japanese is attractive toscholars from both in and abroad. But, contrary to honorific in emotion, contemptuousword suffers inattention due to its semantic particularity and becomes a blind spot in theresearch field of Japanese vocabulary, which is undoubtedly a loss to the cognition forJapanese language system. Actually, the contemptuous word, a kind of rude expression,hides an important pragmatic function, which is not only a significant linguistic meansfor emotion expression, but also an essential part for language awareness research. Froma perspective of semantic, rhetoric and pragmatics, this thesis explores Japanesecontemptuous word by means of statistics research methods through collection ofcontemptuous word examples occur in dictionary, corpus and films. The forms,characteristics and practical application of Japanese contemptuous word are alsodescribed objectively. Moreover, taking the connotative Japanese culture intoconsideration, the thesis tries to outline the Japanese contemptuous word system.
