Objective: Aiming at study the visual working memory mechanism of emotional facial identity recognition.Furthermore, combined with event-related potential technique to further investigate the influence of contemptuous expressions performing on the facial identity recognition of individuals with social anxiety in the encoding stage.Methods:(1)The experiment 1 used an adapted delayed discrimination task combined with ERP technology to explore how it affects the facial identity recognition of individual when contemptuous expressions and happy expressions appear in the visual WM coding stage(Note that happy faces are used as the baseline level(Jackson,Wu,Linden,& Raymond,2009)).The electrophysiological differences between the visual WM scores and P3 b,LPP amplitudes in the encoding and retrieve stages of 27subjects(12 men)were analyzed and compared.(2)The experiment 2 also used an adapted delayed recognition task, combined with event-related potential technology,to investigate the influence of contemptuous expressions on facial identity recognition of individuals with social anxiety when emotional faces appear during encoding in visual WM.The visual WM performance of 26 control subjects(11 men)and 24 social anxiety subjects(11 men)were investigated.Result:(1)The behavioral results of experiment 1 found that the sensitivity d’ of visual WM of contemptuous expressions, hit rate, false alarm rate and correct rejection rate of the individual’s contemptuous expressions were all worse than the visual WM of happy expressions. In the coding stage, the P3 b amplitude and LPP amplitude induced by the contemptuous faces are significantly smaller than those of happy faces;in the retrieve stage, the LPP amplitude induced by the neutral face coded as contemptuous faces is smaller than the LPP amplitude induced by the neutral face coded as happy faces;(2)The behavioural results of the experiment 2 found that the appearance of contemptuous expressions during encoding will weaken the individual’s facial identity recognition. It was found that the P1 amplitude induced by the contemptuous expression was significantly strengthened than that of the happy face, and the P1 amplitude of the social anxiety group was strengthened than that of the control group.Contrary to the P1 component, the N250 amplitude of the social anxiety group was smaller than that of the control group. In the analysis of the P3 b amplitude, the interaction between group and emotion was found.Simple effects analysis found that in the social anxiety group,P3 b induced by the neutral face encoded as contemptuous was significantly greater than happy faces. The results also showed that the LPP amplitude of the control group caused by the neutral face encoded as contemptuous was smaller than that of the social anxiety group.Conclusion:(1)In visual WM,the facial identity recognition is weakened when the contemptuous expressions appear during encoding stage;(2)When contemptuous expressions appear during encoding in visual WM,individuals with social anxiety showed processing tendency towards neutral faces encoded as contemptuous and accelerate the process of identity matching decision-making. |
