Gesture is a set of non-linguistic signs which, under control of people’s speech center, is established by the shape and position of the palms and fingers to express oneself and communicate with others. The use of gesture is earlier than that of the graphic and letter symbols in recorded human history. By providing a certain means for information exchange, gestures have been playing a vital role in human communication. Thus, gestures are the most common and intuitive symbols that can be understood by most people. This thesis will mainly analyze the use of five frequently-used gestures (fist-clinching, praising, OK, victory and hand-waving), which demonstrate various demands of the audience against different cultural backgrounds for visual design and aesthetic appreciation by representing culture of different regions and by communicating different messages. By analyzing the differences, the redesign and enrichment of the form and language of visual design will be demonstrated. Designers can benefit a lot from the reapplication of gesture symbols. The combination of gesture symbols and characters may provide character design with more inspirations. And the combination of gesture symbols and space may provide space design with innovative angles. The visual design works in accord with people’s aesthetic demand will be explored and studied.Researches show that the conceptual analysis of gesture symbols, which constitutes a new tool for visual design, is more humanized and popular. By discussing the experimental performance of visual design with gesture symbols, this thesis is to probe into the fictionalization and massification of gesture symbols. By dissecting the applicability and necessity of gesture symbols use at home and abroad and by studying its future trends, this thesis aims to develop an unimpeded visual language, to bring much more convenience to human communication, to conclude various means for visual design with gesture symbols and to provide theoretical references and new design ideas for designers.
