Lu’s commentaries of history is the last book to sum up the thought of philosophers ofpre-Qin Period. Because of its hybrid public-mining, it has been regarded as therepresentative of eclectics. It has been controversial about Lu’s commentaries of history’sdominant ideology and school tendency, however, Confucianism has a large proportion inthe book. Confucian ideas were expounded in Lu’s commentaries of history, Lu’scommentaries of history hold Confucius in high esteem and references Confucian classics,it pays enough attention on Confucianism. It is conductive to understanding the effect ofLu’s commentaries of history on the development of Confucianism, if we research Lu’scommentaries of history’s Confucianism. It is also conducive to deepening ourunderstanding about the value of Lu’s commentaries of history’s ideological content.This paper focuses on analysis and research of Confucianism in Lu’s commentaries ofhistory, the first chapter mainly analyzing its eclectic character. It is owing to itscombination of Confucianism and Mohist as well as its conformity with Legalism that Lu’scommentaries of history has always been regarded as the representative of eclectics. Thisbook owns a feature of adopting and fusing advantages from all schools, which not onlyconsists in its fusion of thoughts of various schools, such as Confucianism, Taoism, Mohistand Legalism, but also in its eclectic interpretation of these thoughts, which has become themost significant embodiment of its eclectic character. Therefore, the paper analyzes theeclectic phenomenon of the book. The book attaches great importance to Confucianism, bywhich it was affected largely. The influence mainly manifests in two aspects: firstly, thebook thinks highly of Confucius, secondly, there are many quotations from Confucianclassics. The second chapter focuses on its respect for Confucius and the condition of itsquotations from Confucian classics. Lu’s commentaries of history interprets Confucianismfrom a variety of perspectives with discretion and choice. As to Confucianism, it absorbsmore political ideology, social ethics, educational philosophy, and musical ideology, etc.The third chapter concretely analyzes Confucianism in the book from political ideology,ethics, educational philosophy, musical ideology. Confucianism in the book is generallyinvolved in the above four ranges. This paper intends to employ three chapters to get abetter understanding of Lu’s commentaries of history through the analysis of the eclectic character, the respect for Confucius, quotations from Confucian classics and Confucianismpresented in the book. Lu’s commentaries of history played a certain role in promoting thedevelopment of Confucianism of pre-Qin period. It also has a profound and far-reachingimpact on the academic development of pre-Qin period and Han Dynasties.Its historicalstatus and ideological value should be valued.
