Chiang Yee, endowed with multi-cultural identities and engagedin introducing Chinese culture in English-speaking countries,ishardly known by most Chinese readers. The previous researches onChiang Yee had been focusing on the aspect of contemporary literarytheoretical criticism. While there is particularity of Chiang Yee:Combing wrtings with painting, he was always expressing an idealimage of Chinese culture independent from the West to the foreignculture through the observation and comparation by his Chinese Eye.The cultural image, that is, the peculiar one of Chinese artintegrated poem, painting and calligraphy as a whole as well as theChinese scholarly artist.Therefore, the dissertation takes Chiang Yee as a cultural caseon the history of sino-western arts exchange research. Its intentionis to discover the conventions of these two different cultures fromthe view of art history under the cross-cultural communication, andhow they had been looking, conversing, understanding andmisunderstanding with each other.The dissertation consists of preface and4chapters. The prefaceincludes motive, retrospection, clues and range of the research,together with structure of the dissertation. Chapter one is ChiangYee’s experience in China, including his bringing-up of traditionalculture and his later career options. Chapter two is about his changeof personal identity and the retrospect of his native culturaltradition by writing and painting. Chapter three is to focus on thesight of Chiang Yee on the foreign landscape as a Chinese artist byanalyzing the view, expression and the acceptance of image by ChineseEye. Chapter four is about how art of China and West, especially theformer, were looked upon by Chinese Eye. Hence representing theknowledge of Chinese art and art history by both China and Britain atthe certain historical stage; Also discovering Chiang Yee’s personalrealization through the writing by analyzing his motive.
