Xu Xueyi’s ShiYuanBianTi produced at late Ming Dynasty is a comprehensivepoetics. Due to the partial points on poems at that time, Xu Xueyi attempted tocomment the poems in an impartial way. ShiYuanBianTi shows differentcharacteristics of poems written by poets living in different dynasties. Byanalysing the poems’ derivation and variation, distinguishing the well-balanced andthe metabolic, Xu Xueyi expressed his views of points on the development of poems.Xu Xueyi attached enormous importance to Ti which was a complex concept inChinese traditional theory of literature and art. It included the meaning of contents,themeaning of forms,the meaning of styles and the meaning of emotion. Thedevelopment of poems needed these parts, so Ti was significant to the poems’development. By discriminating Ti, Xu Xueyi showed regular patterns of poems’development,which was valuable for further development of poems.By illustrating the derivation and variation of poems of successive dynasties, XuXueyi pointed out the consecutive relation between successive dynasties. Then, hestated the significance of innovation of the poems’ development. He pointed out thatwith reasonable succession, proper innovation could be helpful for the development ofpoems. However, without sufficient succession, it would be harmful to thedevelopment of poems. He thought that the development of poems requiredsuccession as well as innovation. They were both significant for the development ofpoems.In addition, it was obvious that the abilities and accomplishments of poets and thedistinctions of different times impose considerable impacts on the development ofpoems. Not only did Xu Xueyi demonstrate the poets’ capability,attainment,knowledge and experience which affected the development of poems, buthe explained the influence of the poets’ emotion. The capability and emotion of poetsdefinitely affected the development of poems.By illustrating and analysing Qingxingand Xingqu, he found that the emotion of poets could accelerate the improvement of poems.Xu Xueyi was eager to summarized the characteristics of poems’ progress, whichshowed the regular pattern of the poems’ development. It is admitted that not only canthe regular pattern of the poems’ development help us to study poems, but it canaccelerate the flourish of poems.
