With the global internationalization increasingly deepen, Cultural communication as the output of the country’s soft power is the attention of the countries all over the world. Television documentary as a kind of non-fictional art form contains rich cultural connotation, and it becomes an important vehicle for propaganda and communication around the world, also plays an important role on the external shape of the national image and enhance soft power.At present, with the achievement of peaceful rise of China, Chinese culture as a national soft power is paid to attention. Television documentary as a TV art form possesses the real quality and cultural connotation, to build up the bridge of communication between China and the world. The purpose of this study is that through the international spread of TV documentary history and present situation research, plus combing existing experience, we can find out what is the problem in the situation; and explore some strategies for reference and methods, which is able to provide certain references and valuable thinking for the international spread of Chinese television documentary. In this paper, through literature research, case analysis method, comparative analysis and other research methods, we get the conclusions of the Chinese television documentary of international spread history since it was produced, and summarize the characteristics of the three historical periods for the Chinese television documentary is that one-way communication, two-way communication and effectively spread. Analysis of the current television documentary of international communication in the environment both home and abroad, there are three successful television documentaries in the international spread at the present, The Imperial Palace, The Wild China and A Bite of China. On the case study of them, we refined out of the main points of the international communication.There are some of the popular Chinese TV documentary works in the world, but it still exist some problems in the international communication such as concepts in the creation process, production quality, talent reserve, money into marketing, promotion, etc. To solve these problems, this article discusses the communication strategy and methods from the aspects of creation concept, communication and marketing ways and international audience.Facing the prosperity of culture industry development and international communication increasingly frequent, China’s television documentary begins to show its charm in the world, and has made a contribution for the country’s image and output of the cultural soft power.
