Model essays are very important for writing teaching since they are students’ model in learning and practice, and imitation is an inevitable stage for foreign Chinese writing learners. However, text books in use currently are edited under different principles, especially in ways of selecting model essays. To sizing up this problem and build up a unified principle of the selection on model essays in Chinese writing text books, according to survey answers of Chinese writing learners in Beijing and the theoretical study of the model essays in "Developing Chinese" Writing series,"Chinese Intermediate/Advanced Writing Course","Chinese Writing Course" and "Experiencing Chinese Writing Course", this thesis, under the view of Krashen’s "Input Hypothesis", studies the principles of selecting model essays for writing materials of teaching Chinese as a foreign language from four aspects, which are scientificalness, demonstrativeness, interestingness and culturalness.In introduction chapter, the thesis introduces reasons of choosing this topic, the range of study, research methods and the innovation of this study.The second chapter clarifies Krashen’s "Input Hypothesis" and related theories.The third chapter introduces the4series of writing materials of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, and enumerates the model essays that we extract as sample.The forth chapter investigates the model essays in "Developing Chinese" Writing series,"Chinese Intermediate/Advanced Writing Course","Chinese Writing Course" and "Experiencing Chinese Writing Course" from scientificalness, demonstrativeness, interestingness and culturalness, with the reference of questionnaire survey of some foreign students in Beijing colleges and universities. This investigation includes the length, the complexity, the literary form, the attractiveness students’ satisfaction and so on of the model essays. Besides, this chapter also analyses the best prototype model essay for classroom writing teaching of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, and the most useful model essay for foreign students when they learn to write. The last chapter describes several basic principles for selecting model essays for writing materials of teaching Chinese as a foreign language according to the survey and analysis above.
