The popularization of mandarin in China has undergone a period of more than50years. Under the common efforts of government, different grades of language institutions and ordinary people, we have seen the success of popularizing mandarin, especially in some big and middle cities, where it has been fundamentally popularized. What needs to be pointed out is that in most small cities and rural areas of China, mandarin still has not been popularized, which means that the popularization needs to be deeply done. Therefore, in order to follow the process of popularizing mandarin, this thesis focuses on a small city-GaoPing in. ShanXi province. The author mainly starts from the perspective of occupation and the popularization of mandarin, and sets the respondents in school, party institutions, press media and the public service, in order to find out the difficulties of popularizing mandarin and at the same time, propose some practical opinions.Through researching and analyzing, we come to the conclusion:Mandarin becomes the school language of GaoPing in ShanXi province, but it does not become the official language of people working in party institutions. Mandarin is the propaganda language of mass media, but their workers have general levels of speaking mandarin. In the public service, because of different apartments, the situation of using mandarin is also different. What’s more, the relatively optimistic apartments are financial communication, hotels and restaurants, while none of their mandarin levels are high. In general, mandarin is not popularized in this area, there are certain problems of attitudes in using mandarin and the degree of popularizing it. This thesis proposes some problems based on the above problems. These countermeasures are reasonable and practical due to respondents’ occupational characteristics and their language circumstance.
