| After the civilized period, during the modernization of South Korea, the first fundamental problem of linguistic research is organizing the standards of the language. In language specification, organizing and standardizing spelling become a hot issue of the research, and the representatives of spelling researchers are Si-gyeong Ju, Seo-kyeong Ji, etc. All this time, Si-gyeong Ju and Seo-kyeong Ji are highly recognized by South Korean linguistics academics because of their research achievements and contributions, and also, many scholars inherited and developed their theoretical results. So far, there are many studies have done about Si-gyeong Ju’s academic achievements but not Seo-kyeong Ji’s. In order to organize and standardize the unsystematic spelling of modern Korean language, Si-gyeong Ju and Seo-kyeong Ji paid great efforts, and also laid the foundation to the "Proposal for Unified Korean Orthography (Han-geul Matchumbeop Tong-iran)"("Korean Orthography (Chosono Choljabop)",1933). Before the formulation of "Proposal for Unified Korean Orthography", in Modern Korean era, the spelling was diverse, since there was not a unified system of Korean spelling. A certain period of time was needed for the formulation and develops of the principles and rules of Korean spelling, and it was also related to the spelling before and after the period. Therefore, studying the orthography of a certain period is helpful to the research of the notation before and after the period. As a student who majored in Korean linguistics, discussing principles and rules of the spelling of a certain period, not only is the necessity of research, but also has the theoretical and practical significance. This research is a study of principles and rules of spelling of "Sinhaksinseol", a Korean literature in the late19th century, and does some contributions to the further research of the principles and rules of modern Korean spelling. The purpose of the study is to accurately investigate and analyze the characteristics of spelling of "Sinhaksinseol"(1891), which is written by Seo-kyeong Ji, and compare them to the characteristics of modern Korean spelling, further discuss Seo-kyeong Ji’s claim of characteristics of the early stage spelling.Until now, in the domestic research field of Korean language, not only there are few researches have done for the characteristics of spelling about a literature of a certain time, but also the works are rare which considered Seo-kyeong Ji’s claim of spelling. Seo-kyeong Ji have made a great contribution to the development of Korean language, especially the research of Korean language spelling; however, so far, there is too few of research have discussed about his works. Therefore, this study consider Seo-kyeong Ji’s early book, discuss his claim of the relationship between the linguistic theory and the spelling, and analyze precisely the principles of spelling, and also look in depth to Seo-kyeong Ji’s claim of characteristics of the early stage spelling. This study classified the characteristics of spelling appeared in "Sinhaksinseol" into four parts, which are the spelling inside the morpheme, the spelling of declension·conjugation, the spelling of complex words, and the spelling of others; and discuss the content of the material. The main content of the study is shown as follows:First, Chapter1is an introduction of the study, which includes the purpose and significance of the study, the object and the method of the study, and the research achievements and current situations of modern Korean spelling.Second, Chapter2generally considers the spelling used in "Sinhaksinseol", and divides them into four parts:the spelling inside the morpheme, the spelling of declension·conjugation, the spelling of complex words, and the spelling of others; and discusses the content of the material in details. Also, the study divides the spelling inside the morpheme into seven parts:the spelling of’’, the spelling of ’(?)(ui)’, the spelling of diphthongs followed alveolar ((?)), the spelling of tensed consonants, the spelling of aspiration in morpheme, the spelling of over-syllabication, the spelling of declension·conjugation divides into five kinds: the spelling ending with vowels, the spelling of the stem ending with lax consonants, the spelling of the stem ending with tensed consonants, the spelling of the stem ending with aspiration, and the spelling of irregular inflected words. The spelling of complex words is discussed in two different kinds; one is compound words, and the other is derived words. Spelling of others are the spelling of "(?)"→"(?)" and the spelling of auxiliary words. In this chapter, through a thorough analysis and classification of the spelling, the author comes up with the method of spelling of this material. Third, in chapter3, the author analyzes and summarizes Seo-kyeong Ji’s research achievements of spelling method, and concludes the spelling characteristics of his claim, and discusses how it reflects in the early literature-"Sinhaksinseol". The spelling characteristics of Seo-kyeong Ji’s claim can be divided into following aspects:Firstly, he abolishes the use of character’(?)’, and formulates new character’=’.Secondly, in the early stage, he claims that to use six characters exclusively as initial consonants, to use eleven characters exclusively as medial vowels, and to use eight characters as both initial consonants and final consonants; however, in the later stage, he changes the eight characters of final consonants into seven characters.Thirdly, he insists the common use of alveolar system of ’(?)’, and mark the spelling, even though he agrees that alveolar is the repetition of the single sound.Fourthly, he proposes to mark the four tones. In "Sinzeonggukmun", he suggests to add a dot mark at the right side of the rising tone, the falling tone, and ending tone, but do not mark any signs for the entering tone and the even tone. Besides, as he mentioned in "Eun-mun", adds a black spot at the right side of the high-pitched tone, and marks a circle at the right side of the prolonged tone.Fifthly, he claims that to mark the spelling of diphthongs followed alveolar as monophothongs.Sixthly, except for those five closing tones ’(?)’and three closing tones-’(?)’use the cluster spelling, the others uses the cluster spelling as the way it pronounced. There are twenty initial consonants, twenty-two medial vowels, and eight final consonants appeared in "Sinhaksinseol", and it also remains the character’’and the common use of alveolar system of’(?)’. Besides, he adds a circle sign at the right side of some Sino-Korean characters regardless of height and length. Furthermore, the signs followed the alveolar are confused that both diphthongs and monophothongs are used. The spelling of lax consonants, tensed consonants, and aspiration are marked as cluster, syllabication, re-syllabication, etc.At last, chapter4is the conclusion of the study, which summarizes the content of each chapter, and also discusses both the limitation of the study and necessity of further research. This study mainly analyzes and classifies the rules of spelling of Seo-kyeong Ji’s article-"Sinhaksinseol". The sample sentences shown in the study may be limited since not every spelling of words in the material is fully analyzed and classified. Also, this thesis is so rough that it’s lack of in-depth, because the author’s personal ability of academic research still needs to be improved. The author hopes to continue the research with more systematic and comprehensive methods to make it even more forceful and perfect. |
