Appellations Of Armor Given Miao

The appellation of relatives is on one hand a linguistic phenomenon which reflects the features and status of the linguistic system in which people use their languages; on the other hand, it is also a cultural phenomenon which insinuates the underlying meanings of the cultural system in which marriage and family are formed. The relatives appellation carries both the natural and the social properties, which, as a bonding cultural phenomenon, links various and different research areas together effectively. The relatives appellation in the language of Miao ethnicity stems from the connection between the relation and the institution of the relatives, and displays more facets on the embedded historical cultures and religious traditions. The research of relative appellation in Miao language, as far as the literatures have recorded, has focused more on the research of the culture than linguistics. Therefore, targeting the relatives appellation in Miao language in Jiading village, Gaopo Miao-autonomous-township, Huaxi District, Guiyang City, Guizhou Province, P.R. China, based on the first-hand materials collected from the field work, this paper describes and classifies the appellation system of the relatives, as well as discusses and analyzes the rules and laws from the perspectives of semantics and pragmatics.This article starts from the consanguinity and the affinity, walking through grandparents, parent, child, grandchild, and great-grandson-generations. In this article, the appellation system of the relatives in Jiading Miao is systematically studied, described, and analyzed from the perspectives of semantics and pragmatics.The semantic analysis in this article unfolds from the study and research on Semanteme, Sememe, Semantic-Construction, and Semantic-Field of the relatives appellation of Jiading Miao language. Firstly, semantic categories are decided:consanguinity and the affinity, lineal-kinship and collateral-kinship, generation, gender, and seniority, and so on. Secondly, the categories are re-classified into three relations:first-layer relation, second-layer relation, and terminate relation, based on which a deeper Semanteme analysis has been taken. Then, it analyzed the phenomenon that one term refers to multiple kinship relations, conducting the Sememe Syntagmatic analysis and discovering the Sememe network, to induce that the major terms in Jiading Miao language are formed by the Sememe network with the4major elements:gender, lineal-kinship and collateral-kinship, intimacy and strangeness, as well as elder and younger. At last, several semantic combinations of the relatives terms in Jiading Miao language are introduced, getting to the point that the semantic-field of the relatives terms in Jiading Miao language are of the characteristics of diversity, self-closure, and sociality.The using of relatives terms in Jiading Miao language, in many cases, is not a one-to-one mapping, nor with a unified appellation method, but varies according to the occasions, marital status of the callee, the offspring status of the callee, and the standpoint of the addressor, which is called the "Mutation of the Titles". Therefore, the five types of addressing:narrative and symmetric addressing, husband-side and wife-side addressing, children-side addressing, and parent-side addressing, and explanatory addressing are discussed in a broader extent.
