Wu Lai, a famous litterateur in Yuan Dynasty, was known as “three masters in Yiwu” or“three great masters in the East of Zhejiang” together with Huang Jin and Liu Guan. Because henever worked in the government and there were few records on him, Wu Lai attracted fewresearchers’ attention, though he played a great role in the literary word.Wu Lai was born in an old and well-known family, which was famous in Wuxi Pujiang. A lotof great litterateurs came from his family, such as Wu Ying, Wu Wei, Wu Qian, etc. Wu Lai’sfather, Wu Zhifang, was very successful in the officialdom as great master of glorious happinessand Jixian great academician. Wu Zhifang was diligent and fortitude, from who Wu Lai learned alot. Wu Lai was a rare talent in childhood, but failed in the imperial examinations. Therefore, hemoved to live in mountains, writing books and teaching the young. He was in poor health in hislifetime and died in his early forties.Although Wu Lai lived a short life, he was in the time of the developing of Wuzhou literaryword. At this time, there appeared many great masters such as Fang Feng, Hu Changru, WuShidao, Huang Jingchang, Song lian,Hu Han, Wang Hui, etc. They were closely connected withWu Lai as his teachers, students or friends. After quantity of research work, we got known therelationship between Wu Lai and these maters, which is helpful for us to understand the thoughtand role of the submerged Wu Lai in the literary world.The first chapter:Wu Lai’s family and his life. Wu Lai was born in an old and well-knownfamily with a number of outstanding ability persons in Wuxi Pujiang. The famous Yuquan PoetryClub was founded by Wu Wei, a great master from Wu’s family. Yuquan Poetry Club was thehome of numerous famous scholars in Wuzhou, like Fang Feng, Xie Xiang, Wu Siqi and so on.Wu Lai was of great learning and great ability but unlucky in official career. Thus, he moved tolive in mountains, writing books and teaching the young. He was in poor health in his lifetime anddied in his early forties.The second chapter:Wu Lai’s teachers. The reason why Wu Lai could be a famous litterateurin Yuan Dynasty and known as “three masters in Yiwu” or “three great masters in the East ofZhejiang” together with Huang Jin and Liu Guan was that he was educated well. He received goodfamily tutoring ever since born. When he was about seven, he became the student of the greatmaster Fang Feng, who taught him Spring and Autumn Annals, classics and histories, married hisgrand-daughter to him, and guided him to the official career.The third chapter:Wu Lai’s friends. Wu Lai never left his hometown, so his friends weremostly scholars in Wuzhou. Despite of age, the scholars in Wuzhou were connected with eachother by scholarship, enhanced by affinity, and closely contacted like teachers and students. The fourth chapter:Wu Lai’s students. Wu Lai wrote many books in his life, which wereshining in the literary history. However, Wu Lai’s reputation relied more on his brilliant students,who were Song Lian, Hu Han, Dai Liang, and so on. They inherited their teacher’s thought andlearning, advanced them and made great contribution to the development of Chinese literature inthe late Yuan and early Ming Dynasties.In a word, researches on Wu Lai’s life and the relevant persons helped us to understand hisrole in literary history, which provided historic materials for studying Wu Lai’s literature creation.
