Hyperplasia of mammary glands is a common disease among females. Factors such as occupational stress, bad lifestyle habits have led to an increasing trend in the disease. Modern medicine suggests that it is a disease of endocrine disorder and steroidal drug is currently the main source of treatment. However, steroidal drugs cause adverse drug reactions and thus, the treatment for cystic hyperplasia of the breast is still unclear. The treatment in the study is based on the diagnostics of traditional Chinese medicine, according to the changes in the blood and energy flow during patients’menstrual cycle with concurrent intake of chinese herbal medicine. Acupuncture is another alternative treatment based on the diagnostics of traditional chinese medicine such that local and distal meridian points are selected to improve the blood circulation in the body. Currently, the research on meridians and organs is based on the combination of anatomy of the human organs with respective meridians, however modern medicine could not complement with the theory of traditional Chinese medicine. Firstly, organs and anatomical organs are similar but not exactly the same. Secondly, meridian lines flows throughout the body with the connections of multiple organs. The study of the relationship between a meridian and an organ is not comprehensive. The diagnostics of traditional Chinese medicine is an holistic approach to the evaluation of physiology of an organ. In this study, cystic hyperplasia of the breast is investigated using two diagnostics approach, namely organ pattern diagnosis and merdian pattern diagnosis.ObjectiveThe study aims to investigate on patients with hyperplasia of mammary glands via pattern diagnosis. It analyzes on current common meridian syndromes and explore on the different aspects of the syndromes. The study also led to the discovery of selection of reasonable acupuncture points using organ pattern diagnosis approach on the treatment of hyperplasia of mammary glands. The co-relation between the two diagnostics approach can be further investigated.Methods120patients with hyperplasia of mammary glands from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Dong Fang Hospital acupuncture clinic were enrolled in the study. The age of the patients, duration and symptoms of the disease were documented. Based on the information collected, the patients were distributed evenly into Meridian pattern diagnosis group and organ diagnosis group. Statistical analysis was then used to analyze on the established database of patients with treatment via two different kinds of treatment methods.ConclusionThe description of《Ling Shu》on the meridian and the main symptoms, has ultimately resulted in the selection of breast disease associated with kidney, stomach, liver, Chong and Ren meridians syndromes via four basics of traditional chinese medicine diagnostic parameters. The study enrolled120patients with mammary glands, according to four types of disease syndrome namely:47cases of kidney meridian syndrome,30cases of stomach disease syndrome,25cases of liver disease syndrome,18cases of Chong and Ren meridians syndrome. Common symptoms among meridians are irritation and easily-angered, pain and numbness in waist and knees, and dry throat. In addition to the above mentioned symptoms, kidney meridian has symptoms such as back pain, chills, dizziness, forgetfulness, insomnia; Stomach meridian has symptoms such as discomfort in the lower front limb, bloated in stomach, chills; Liver meridian has symptoms such as loose stools, medial lower limb discomfort, back pain, chest tightness; Chong and Ren has symptoms such as bloated in both sides of waist, acid reflux, forgetfulness, hiccups, insomnia, hypochondriac pain. According to the etiology and pathogenesis of mammary glands, with reference to " Chinese medicine diagnosis ", ten closely related organs were selected. Syndromes associated with the causes of the disease, have all the statistical sample to syndrome of yin deficiency of liver and kidney mainly through correlation analysis, mammary glands by kidney meridian and syndrome of yin deficiency of liver and kidney, liver-spleen disharmony, exuberance of stomach fire related; stomach meridian and damp-heat retention in spleen, liver-spleen disharmony, stomach cold, yang deficiency of the spleen and kidney, stagnation of liver-QI; liver meridian and syndrome differentiation by yin deficiency of liver and kidney, liver-spleen disharmony, wetness-heat of liver and gallbladder syndrome; Chong and Ren meridians and syndrome differentiation by liver-stomach disharmony, liver-kidney yin deficiency.SummaryThe study of meridian theory through pattern diagnosis using statistical analysis has preliminary clinical results of mammary glands in kidney meridian, stomach meridian, liver meridian, Chong and Ren meridians with their respective symptoms. The investigations of co-relation between meridian pattern diagnosis and organs pattern diagnosis on the treatment of cystic hyperplasia of the breast has provided a theoretical basis.
