Background:Depression is an emotional disorder, more performance for low mood, slow thinking and behavior to reduce which we called "three lows" symptoms. It is one of the most common groups of mental disorders,it happens in countries around the world, all kinds of people and all sectors of society in a variety of environments.Currently, about340million people worldwide are affected. And at this point,at least1/50children under12years of age, adolescents1/20,male adults1/10and female adults1/4once depressed this disorder or are taking place. In recent years, the study of the pathogenesis of depression, changes in brain function imaging in patients gradually become a hot spot. Scholars use fMRI technology has also made some achievements, found that depression is caused by certain brain regions which have metabolic disorders, the dysfunction of the left frontal lobe, frontal lobe, amygdala, cingulate gyrus, etc.are related to depression. However, in terms of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), The depression’s treatment of Chinese medicine is based on syndrome differentiation and treatment variation, the difference of syndromes, whether can beget the differences in brain of radiological function? What is the theoretical basis of functional imaging with various syndromes of traditional Chinese medicine? This is all we need for further study.Purpose:To use fMRI technology observe depression patients who are stagnation of liver-QI’s functional areas of brain activation region, compared with normal brain function imaging, Through facial expression recognition research, compare the activation of brain areas. In order to finish the stagnation of liver-QI patients and normal brain function imaging differences.Methods:3.0T functional magnetic resonance imaging system was used to observe15cases of stagnation of liver-QI and15normal subjects to identify four categories of emotional expressions on the faces of joy、neutral、sadness and anger reaction, comparing two differences imaging in brain regions activated group. The demographics (IQ, gender, age and education) of the control group matched the patients with depression, and all the healthy control group subjects’ psychiatric family history need to be negative. The study of behavior data analysis software SPSS13and brain functional image data processing and statistical analysis of the control group by SPM8software gender, age and education level of the patient group matches with no psychiatric family history. The image data processing and statistical analysis of SPM8software activation maps of brain regions.Results:1. There is no difference between the liver-QI patients and the normal group people in reaction time and the right facial expression recognition rate.2.When depression of the liver-QI patients in identifying angry and neutral faces, the cerebral blood flow of bilateral amygdala、bilateral cingulate are more active than the normal control group.Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activity weakened compared with the control group.3.When depression of the liver-QI patients in identifying fear and neutral faces, the cerebral blood flow of bilateral amygdala、right prefrontal cortex are more active than the normal control groupAWhen depression of the liver-QI patients in identifying joy and neutral faces, the cerebral blood flow of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex、left cingulate are more active than the normal control group.Conclusion:1.Depression of the liver-QI patients in identifying angry faces, the cerebral blood flow of bilateral amygdala, bilateral cingulate are more active, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activity are weakened. Bcause the bilateral amygdala、bilateral cingulate management anger, so the corresponding regions of brain are active. It is complianced with basic theory of TCM of "liver is anger in the emotional function ".2.Depression of the liver-QI patients in identifying fear faces, the cerebral blood flow of bilateral amygdala is more active. This is consistent with the theory of TCM for liver governing regulating,etc.3.Depression of the liver-QI patients in identifying joy faces, the cerebral blood flow of bilateral superior frontal gyrns and left putamen are more active. This is consistent with the theory of TCM for liver storing soul, liver mastering mindconsider,etc.4.This research suggests that "liver" in TCM emotional adjustment may be relaterd to amygdala and callosal convolution of the Papze loop, liver qi deficiency, liver qi stagnation syndrome of TCM may be the dysfunction of amygdala and callosal convolutioedge in the Papze loop.
