Penetration warhead is usually divided into two types in terms of the operating principle: kinetic energy penetration warhead and tandem warhead.In the thesis a tandem warhead composed of former circular shaped charge and a rear penetration projectile was proposed. The rule of the former shaped charge is to form annular jet to penetrate the target for the first time, and so there will be a annular groove in the target. Then the projectile with a high velocity will impact the target on the center of the groove.Firstly, the development and research results on tandem warhead was introduced in the thesis, and then the effect and mechanism about the formation of annular jet and penetration of projectile on the target was analyzed. Based on the theoretical foundation, the author proposes a novel design of M type liner, including the structure design, as well as the design of the materials, thickness, taper angle,charging structure and initiation mode. Finally, the processes of the form of annular jet as well as the penetration of the projectile on the target with groove were studied by numerical simulation and ballistic experiments. The influence of the inclination angle, depth as well as the diameter of the groove on the damage effect of the target is also discussed.The result shows that:the top of the liner should be in the form of circular arc and the connection of two symmetrical part should be closed. The structure allows M type liner to produce steady jet which makes circular cutting on the steel plate to achieve pre-splitting. The depth of the pre-splitting groove is4mm when the thickness of the steel plate is8mm. The influence of the inclination angle of the groove on the damage effect of the target is negligible. With the following penetration of the projectile on the pre-splitting steel target, there are two kinds of damages mechanism:the projectile will perforate the target when the depth of the circular groove is not big enough, otherwise, the bottom of the groove will fracture even though the projectile cannot perforate the target. The increase of the groove depth and the decrease of the groove diameter will benefit to the penetration of the projectile on the target. For the steel target with groove, the penetration ability of projectile improved by about30~50percent.
