The research of the insulation test for the extra high voltage power transformer, which is technically difficult, complex structure and high voltage, has been academic meaning and engineering application value. The paper explains and studies the two insulation tests of the extra high voltage power transformer--the lightning impulse test and the partial discharge test, and solves the main problems encountered during the process of tests. In the lightning impulse test, the modulation device is added to improve the lightning waveform, and the contradiction between wave head time and overshoot voltage is solved. In the partial discharge test, the partial discharge test method of extra high voltage power transformer and processing method of partial discharge signals are described detailedly, and the paper focus on the use of ultrasonic location system for locating the partial discharge position. The exact location of the partial discharge signal will provide accurate data support for extra high voltage power transformer during rework process and the later on production process. The extra high voltage power transformer produced by our company has been applied in the Nanyang power distributing substation in the model project of extra high voltage power transportation between the East-South of Jin-Nanyang-Jingmeng. The technical parameters of this transformer are met the requriments, and the application improves the energy distribution and solves the problem of power transportation cross-regional.
