Qingyang locates in the east of Gansu province, along with the Pingliang collectively known as "Longdong." Buddhism was introduced into the central plains along the silk road since the Eastern Han dynasty, once spreaded to the northern region along the Qin straight. The prosperity of Buddhism in Qingyang region is closely related to the development of its traffic. Northern Wei Dynasty, the rulers vigorously promoted Buddhism, grottoe was also flourished of this period. The grottoe in Qingyang region from the Northern Wei Dynasty to Ming and Qing Dynasties, has nearly30, which has a state-level cultural relics protection units,5provincial cultural relics protection units.Zhangjiagoumen grottoe,which is the ealiest in qingyang region. North cave temple, as one of the four big grottoes in Gansu province, is a national key cultural relics protection units, Its essence is concentrated in sigou part, carving makes extremely rich content, its various stone carving art, condenses the essence of culture, longdong, han and tang dynasties is the crystallization of ancient Chinese and foreign cultural exchanges, occupies a certain position in the history of Chinese buddhist grotto art. This paper is divided into three parts,which describes the present situation of qingyang district respectively,the relationship between Buddhism and grottoe, give a detailed description of some important grottoes, finally introduces the three important problems related to grottoe, respectively, the relationship between the ancient transportation and cave grottoe, the protection of cave grottoe.
