It is a report on translation of EXPLORING THE WAYS OF MANKIND. The source text stems from the preface and the three articles (the whole structure of which is consistent with that of the original work, that is, summarization, the examples from primitive society and the examples from the western civilization) of the fourth section on "education, the continuity of culture" of EXPLORING THE WAYS OF MANKIND, which was compiled by Walter Rochs Goldschmidt, a famous anthropologist in America. The syntactic structures in the original work are much more complicated. There are also a lot of transformation of sentence types and style expansion in it, so it belongs to Exposition. The author of the original work strives to express his own ideas in a comprehensive and careful way. In order to avoid being one-sided and neglectful, the author uses lots of long English sentences in the original work. Because translation of the long English sentences is tough to tackle in this translation practice, the translator will discuss it in three aspects including the definition and the characteristics of long English sentences, translation steps of long English sentence, translation methods of long English sentences based on some examples. The translation report consists of four chapters. The first chapter introduces the reasons and significance of the selected subject and makes lots of feasibility studies. The second chapter is the introduction of the background of the original work, including the author’s life and achievements as well as the structural features and creation purpose of the original work. The third chapter is the main body of the translation report. The translator applies the methods of translating, following the original syntactic order, reinventing sentence structures, and breaking the whole into parts with a number of examples figuring out the difficulties in this translation practice. The translation confusion and its problems in the process of translation practice will be mentioned in the last chapter. The translator, based on the Chinese translation of the excerpts of the original works, tries to provide some reference for those who come across the same interests and same confusion while doing research on the similar text.
