| Currently English has gaining its appeal to many learners to get an improvement. A large number of English learners are booming all over the world, with the awareness of the importance residing in English nowadays. Nevertheless, when coming to write or say, that is to say, when it comes to give output rather than reading, learners seem to be confused with certain words with similar meaning, which leads to misuse or inappropriate use in some condition.For a detail comparison on the differences among the node words with lexical study, discussion is presented both qualitatively and quantitatively. The lexis under study are all with the meaning of berthing place, namely pontoon, jetty, wharf, dock, quay and pier, which has high occurrences.Quantitatively, the thesis mainly introduces how to distinguish specific synonyms related to maritime terminologies in terms of colligation and collocation. First, the frequency of each word in different area is presented with COCA online service is employed. Then CLAWS7Software which is fixed in COCA is used to extract the concordance lines to get a clear comparison between colligation and collocation among those node words with the analysis ofthe meaning and origin of each word.Based on the analysis, it can be summarized that except for several distinctions, all the significant colligations of those synonyms are N+N, N+V, N+ADJ, N+PREP; there are a variety of differences exist in the collocation of every synonym, though little similarity resides. Through consulting several authoritative dictionaries, it can be found out that many of those synonyms take distinctive Chinese translation after analyzing the concordance lines of individual word as well as comparing the origins and semantic meanings. |
