Intertextuality is a new method and a new trend which sprang up in the1960s inliterary world in France. This concept points out that every text comes out on thebasic of vestige or memory of the previous text or takes shape by absorbing andtransforming other texts. Since Julia Christian Eva put forward this term, intertextuality was soon widely discussed and developed by many theorists.Intertextualtiy theory provides a new angle to translation, especially literarytranslation. Song lyrics not only mark the peak of the literature in the Song dynasty, but also have a huge influence in the development of literature and traditional culturein China. The use of a large number of cultural images is one of the features of Songlyrics. Cultural images are special symbols that have distinct images and illustratecertain cultural meanings. The intertextuality in these cultural images is well worthexploring. This thesis, taking Xu Yuanchong’s translation of300Song Lyrics as a case, aims at discussing the performance of intertextuality in cultural images of Song lyricsand analyzing the translation strategies. Xu Yuanchong’s translation of300SongLyrics was published in2006, which includes a vast number of classic Song lyrics. This thesis selects many cultural images from this book and divides them into ninecategories, including plants, animals, figures, place names, customs, naturalphenomena, allusions, color words and numbers. In addition to discussing theperformance of intertextuality in these images, the thesis analyzes the translation strategies Xu Yuanchong used to deal with the intertextuality in these images. By thestudy, the author hopes to offer a new perspective of literary translation, thereby, making a contribution to the promotion of Chinese classical literary works.
