| In the 1960 s,Julia Kristeva first put forward the term “intertextuality”.Intertextuality theory believes that no text can exist apart from other texts.Words are not fixed points, not static, but points where words and words intersect in time and space. Therefore, intertextuality is closely related to the understanding and acceptance of cultural images in foreign languages.A translation strategy that studies cultural imagery from the perspective of intertextuality helps to better convey the cultural imagery in the source language to the target language audience. Therefore, this thesis will study Howard Goldblatt’s translation of cultural images in Mo Yan’s novel “Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out” from the perspective of intertextuality. There are many cultural images in Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out.As a concentrated embodiment of a national culture, the cultural image has great research value.Howard Goldblatt adopted different translation strategies when translating different kinds of cultural images during the translation process.Based on the theory of Hatim, this thesis divided the cultural images into ecological cultural images, material cultural images, social cultural images, religious cultural images and linguistic cultural images. In the introduction, the background, significance and thesis structure of this paper are briefly discussed. The author illustrates the origin and development of intertextuality and the definition and classification of cultural images. There is a brief introduction of Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out and its author, translator and previous study of the work. The author discusses the intertextual signsin cultural images in Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out and the different translation strategy adopted by the translator towards different cultural images, and analyzes the reappearance and loss and the spread and impediment of cultural images.Based on the two choices, domestication and foreignization, through the research, the author finds that as for domestication, based on the perspective of intertextuality, the translator takes free translation, variation, recreation and omission. As for the foreignization, the translator takes literal translation, transliteration and annotation. It is found that for ecological, material and social cultural images the translator often adopts domestication;for religious and linguistic cultural images the translator is apt to choose foreignization. The thesis summarizes the major findings related to the choice of translation strategies towards different cultural images, lists the limitations and gives suggestions for the further study of the relevant researches. |
