Tracking display is widely used in many areas, such as traffic and spaceflight. Theselection of tracking display directly influences the tracking performance. The presentresearch investigated the effects of three common tracking display formats on trackingperformance (i.e., tracking time, completion rate and subjective experience.) Weadopted two compensatory display formats (format1fixing the control marker in thecenter of display, format2fixing the visual target in the center of display) and onepursuit tracking format, in which both the control marker and visual target aremovable).Expt.1and2addressed the effect of different display formats on trackingperformance in2D space and3D space, respectively. In Expt.3, we refined thetracking display design and testified the improvement.Results showed that:(1) Expt.1: In2D space, both when the visual target wasmoving and static, pursuit tracking format is better than compensatory display2, andcompensatory display2is better than compensatory display1. However, when thevisual target was moving, the time used to finish the three types of mission is muchmore discriminated from each other.(2) Expt.2: In3D space, when visual target wasstatic, the tracking performance of the three types of display formats did not differsignificantly from each other. When visual target was moving, the pursuit display wasbetter than the compensatory displays.(3) Expt.3: The optimized display formatsignificantly improved the completion rate of manual tracking task.Using ergonomic method, the present research investigated the effect of differentdisplay formats on the tracking performance, and proposed and verified an optimaldesign. These findings will improve the performance of manual tracking, and providescientific basis to design tracking display.
