Advice taking, which is a decision-making process formulated by decision-makerswith the reference of others’ suggestion, receives more attention in the research field ofdecision making. To date, most research has studied situational factors helping or hinderingthe exchange of advice, leaving a class of variables relatively unexplored. The few studiesthat have included individual differences have found promising results, such as intelligence, conscientiousness, emotion, power. Self-esteem as an important variable in socialpsychology field, affects the individual’s social adaptation and mental health. Due toexplicit self-esteem and implicit self-esteem are two independent dimensions, the influenceof them is not always consistent, so we aim to discuss the joint influence of explicitself-esteem and implicit self-esteem on advice taking. In experiment1we discussed how the explicit self-esteem, implicit self-esteem andthe discrepancies of self-esteem affect the advice taking. In experiment2by priming thehigh implicit self-esteem, we want to further verify the influence of self-esteemdiscrepancies for advice taking. In Experiment3, we discuss whether self-concept claritymediate the influence of self-esteem discrepancies on advice taking. Three experimentshave a total of310participants attended, experiment1with106students, experiment2with74subjects, and experiment3with130participates.Results show that the explicit self-esteem has a negative correlation with advice, and the influence of implicit self-esteem on advice taking was not significant, but thediscrepancies of explicit self-esteem and implicit self-esteem affects the advice taking, Theself-concept clarity intermediary mediated the influence of self-esteem discrepancies onadvice taking.
