Code-switching is a very common occurrence in the modern life. It is the alternate use of two or more languages and language varieties in the same conversation. As a research topic, code-switching has been studied from grammatical approach, sociolinguistic approach, psycholinguistic approach, and pragmatic approaches, etc, and great achievements have been obtained. Compared with the other approaches, the approach of pragmatics includes the linguistic, social, cultural and cognitive factors as well as unites the description of linguistic phenomenons with their interpretation. The present study used the pragmatic approach and tried to analyze the phenomenon of code-switching in the sitcom Iparment applying Yu Guodong’s adaptation model on code-switching, which is based on Verschueren’s linguistic adaptation theory. The thesis argues that the appearance of code-switching in the sitcom is a realization of communicators’ final aim of successful communication. The focus of the study is to make a detailed analysis of the adaptability that code-switching can fulfill in the sitcom Ipartment. And verify the effectiveness and feasibility of model to adapt. Qualitative analysis is employed in this thesis.Code-switching in the present study is defined as choice of a language and a strategy. That can be utilized by the disseminator of communication strategies to achieve some goals. The code-switching phenomenon stems from the communicators’ adaptation to linguistic reality, social conventions and psychological motivation in sitcom. Over and above this, code-switching can carry out multiple pragmatic functions, such as keeping convenience, improving precision, creating humor, changing emotional distance, expressing emotional feelings and seeking fashion, etc. From the study on code-switching in the famous sitcom Ipartment, it is proved the evidence for that the increasing number of code-switching in sitcoms is a reflection of society and participants’ psychology rather than a pure language phenomenon. Research on code-switching in sitcoms should draw the attention of researchers from various fields, such as linguistics, sociologists and psychologists.
