Code-switching is the process by which speakers transfer from one language or language variant to another throughout the course of a discussion or communication. It can occur at a variety of levels, including letters, words, phrases, sentences, and discourses.Numerous linguists, sociolinguists, and psycholinguists have conducted extensive research on codeswitching in their respective fields of study over the last few decades, and there has been an increasing number of studies on code-switching by Chinese scholars. Some use conversational analysis theory to analyze newspapers and magazines, and others analyze code-switching in the foreign language classroom from a functional perspective. Many studies on code-switching in songs have been conducted, but the author points out that most of the research have focused on the lyrics of popular songs.Has been affected by its origin, style, and rhythm, rap music has its own peculiarities, and Chinese-English code-switching are frequently used in the lyrics. Thus,to enrich the research data on Chinese-English code-switching and to broaden the scope of Chinese-English code-switching research, the author analyzes the phenomenon of Chinese-English code-switching in raps by adopting Myers-Scotton’s Matrix Language Frame Model,Yu’s adaptation model, and Jef Verschueren’s Linguistic Adaptation Theory. When it comes to methodology, the author uses both qualitative and quantitative methods to study the linguistic structure and pragmatic functions of Chinese-English code-switching in rap songs. The pragmatic functions of code-switching in rap songs are reflected in the analysis of the code-switching adaptability. The main functions are:(1)from the perspective of linguistic reality, there are three functions: referring to foreign specialized concepts, foreign products, and creating humorous effects;(2)from the perspective of social conventions, there are two functions: avoiding taboos and euphemism;(3)from the psychological motivations perspective, there are four functions: emphasizing prominence, seeking convenience, and pursuing fashion and shortening social distance;(4)from the perspective of the characteristics of the raps, there are two functions: adapting to the style of the raps and adapting to the rhythm of the raps. The paper also analyses the diversity and adaptation of code-switching in domestic rap songs in terms of genre, year, and position, with the help of informative data. The examination of code-switching adaptation in raps can be used to continuously evaluate the universality and appropriateness of linguistic adaptation theory in the context of songs. It allows the corpus to be updated in future research and relevant synchronic or diachronic studies to be done. This kind of study will not only pave the way for standardizing lyrical content and providing a theoretical foundation for the use of songs in second language acquisition teaching, but will also serve to improve our understanding of rap as a musical form.
