"Fangni’’,“仿拟"in Chinese rhetoric, is a witty, humorous, satirical and sometimes ridiculous figure of speech. This figure of speech deliberately imitates existing language resources with which people are familiar to create new phrases, sentences, or text for a vivid, ironic or humorous effect. It was very popular in ancient Chinese, especially after the Han Dynasty. Till today, it is often widely used in everyday life, ranging from literary works to non-literary works such as advertisements, news reports and many other types of text. Chinese parody has attracted many researchers such as linguists, philosophers, educationalists, etc. So far, there have been many books or academic papers dealing with them from multi-perspectives. Studies on parody in West are mainly conducted from a literary or aesthetic perspective.The theory of figure-ground in its early time is probably best known by the face-vase drawing created by Edgar Rubin. This theory refers to a cognitive ability to separate elements based upon contrast, that is, dark and light, black and white. Many times this definition is expanded from a simple perception based on contrast to include abstract concepts, subject/background and positive/negative space for example.Although there are some relate researches about Chinese parody, the researches for translation of Chinese parody is not enough. In view of limitations of previous studies and important Chinese parody translations, this thesis introduces "figure-ground" conception in Gestalt theory proposed by Max Wertheimer in1921at the beginning of20th century, to deal with these issues of translation of Chinese parody from the perspective of figure-ground theory. More than that, this thesis also have tentatively proposed a new criterion for translating Chinese parody based on Figure-Ground theory. Through this research, a new perspective is wished to be provided to help further research on Chinese parody translation.
